Hi SCAG & fellow supporters,
Given the community’s sentiment & the City of South Perth’s opposition to large destination liquor stores being built adjacent to residential premises, collectively we have now drafted a policy to prevent them from being approved in such areas under the town planning scheme. The draft policy (attached) is currently out for public comment & it’s CRITICAL you comment supporting the policy by this Friday 3rd July.
The draft policy responsibly manages the development of bulk size, large scale liquor outlets so that the community’s opposition stands up rather than being over-ruled later by the JDAP (as per the recent Dan Murphy’s 3rd JDAP hearing in April 2015 approving it at the Como Hotel).
The link below is where you can comment on the draft policy or you may email to:feedback@southperth.wa.gov.au.

The more submissions we get of support the greater the likelihood it will be eventually approved by the West Australian Planning Commission. Similar policies are in place in some other Councils such as Subiaco & Victoria Park to name a few.
The intention of this policy is to ensure the local amenity of South Perth is protected from the introduction of large destination liquor stores, such as Dan Murphy’s or First Choice in inappropriate residential areas to avoid negative impacts. Social & crime issues, increased ill-harm & risk of alcohol abuse amongst youth & “challenged” groups, youth being attracted to the cheapest liquor prices guaranteed are just to name a few. There are more than 9 outlets within a 5 km radius of the Como Hotel site that sufficiently meet consumers’ needs already.
I have been advised that anyone can submit their views of support to this policy (so those not in the electorate, please do so).
Can you please forward this email onto anyone on your mailing list that you believe can support this policy by sending an email of support or a submission. This will ensure community’s avoid large big box outlets from being built in residential areas contrary to Council & the electorates’ views.
